About Us

Maua is the Swahili word for flower.

We are a registered Swedish economic association formed in Mbale, Uganda in 2008, when two of its founding members were there to work on a project in order to develop two local sports organizations. We are committed to improve the living conditions of the people in the Mooni slum area, situated at the foothills of the Wanale Mountain in Eastern Uganda.We believe that unconditional financial aid is not the way to go in order to fight poverty, but rather to identify and develop professional skills and to facilitate the access to markets (markets which SHOULD be equally accessible to all and with equal conditions for trade). Therefore, we prefer to work on a grassroot level, through small, community based projects.

The illiteracy-rate in Mooni is high, and therefore we are currently contributing to pay for a teacher and scholastic material in order to help the women develop their English skills.
